A Teacher's Impact Storytelling Week 13

December 10th was a cold day at Wild Lake Elementary school. The school was preparing for the first snow of the winter. The kids had all arrived bundled up in coats, hats and winter boots. Mrs. Meek was a Kindergarten teacher. Her classroom was filled with 18 five-year old kids. She had been teaching at the school for fifteen years and was used to days like this at school. Due to the weather the school planned an indoor playtime, since going outside was out of the question.

After lunch it was time for the Kindergartners to play in the gym. Each class lined up in a single file line and made their way down the hall and into the gym area. Mrs. Meek and the other five teachers all lined up against the wall and kept an eye on the children. Voices seemed even louder than usual as they echoed against the tall ceilings in the gym.

"Mrs. Meek! Mrs. Meek! Catch the ball," yelled one of her students as he flung a giant bouncy ball her way. It bounced off of her hands as she failed to catch it. Her student ran away and she giggled.

Just as Mrs. Meek walked back to the other teachers Sara another student came up behind her. Sara hugged Mrs. Meek's legs tightly and giggled in delight. " Ok Sara, why don't you go play with your friends," Mrs. Meek said as she leaned down and gave Sara a hug. Student's continued to come up to their teacher. One was crying after they fell, the other seemed to have endless questions that she calmly and delightfully answered.

Five minutes before recess was over the newest staff member Mrs. Adams said, " Mrs. Meek how do you deal with all of these kids on a stressful day like this? How are you so patient?"

"Mrs. Adams you will learn with time what an impact you have on these students. You are their first teacher and their first experience in school. They have not yet learned to be kind and patient so we as teachers must do our best to set an example."

After the day was over Mrs. Adams and the other teachers drove home. As she sat on her couch in front her a burning fire she felt thankful for the day. She had been very stressed starting her new job at the school, but felt she had learned what a value patients can be in a child's life.

Author's Note: This story is an adaptation of the Patient Buffalo. In the story a monkey sees a buffalo and begins to pester him. Everything he does the buffalo has no reaction. Then in the end the buffalo explains this is because the monkey has a small brain so he should not be punished for not knowing any better. This story reminded me of the way a child may act. Children always want attention and unknowingly bother adults around them. I thought the perfect example of this would be a teacher who has a classroom full of young kids. Teachers have such a big impact on the lives of children and showing patients and kindness can be very positive
for young children.

  1. Hello,
I loved your story. I feel a real connection with this story because this story represents why my mother became a teacher. She became a teacher to have an impact on the younger generation and hopefully steer them in the right direction. I loved the moral of the story being be the kind of person you want the younger generation to grow into.
